Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar and wide receiver Mike Matthews had UT football fans evoking memories of Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt on Saturday afternoon in Neyland Stadium.
Aguilar and Matthews connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass in the first half of Tennessee’s dominant 72-17 win against East Tennessee State.
The pass from Aguilar was the real life version of one of those “So-and-so is down there somewhere” memes.
When Aguilar made that throw, the broadcast booth wasn’t sure if he was throwing the ball to Matthews or true freshman wide receiver Travis Smith Jr., who was also in the area.
Vols QB Joey Aguilar confirmed who the pass was intended for
After the game, Aguilar was asked during his media session if the pass was intended for Matthews or Smith.
Aguilar confirmed that he was throwing the ball to Matthews.
“I was throwing it to Mike,” said Aguilar. “As I was rolling [out], there was a lot of green grass on the left side of the field. Travis was clearing out, so I told Mike to get in that area. I had to flip and turn around — the defender was in my face pretty quick — so I threw the ball up and Mike came down with it and made a great play.”
Vols head coach Josh Heupel was asked after the game if he liked the decision by Aguilar.
“Well, if it’s a touchdown, it’s a positive,” said Heupel with a smirk.
Tennessee fans are certainly hoping to see more big plays like that when the Vols host the Georgia Bulldogs next Saturday in Neyland Stadium.
