Urban Meyer’s quote about being honored by Florida during a game against Tennessee won’t surprise Vols fans
Urban Meyer will be honored on Saturday in the Swamp when the Florida Gators take on the Tennessee Vols.
Former Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer will be honored on Saturday night in the Swamp during a game against the Tennessee Vols.
Meyer, who led Florida to two national championships during his time as the head coach in Gainesville, is set to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame next month.
Urban Meyer’s quote about being honored by Florida during a game against Tennessee won’t surprise Vols fans
Meyer is somewhat of a bogeyman for Vols fans.
He wasn’t in the SEC for long — six seasons felt like 16 seasons — but was he was in the conference long enough to become an annual nightmare for Tennessee.
Meyer went 6-0 against the Vols from 2005 to 2010. The Vols’ current losing streak in the Swamp, in fact, was started by Meyer in 2005.
A major reason Meyer found so much success at Florida (and Ohio State and his other stops) was his uncanny ability to consistently motivate players at an elite level.
Meyer leaned into rivalry games — which is why it’s no surprise that his teams performed extremely well in those games (he was also 5-1 against Georgia during his time at Florida).
That’s also why Meyer’s quote this week about being honored during a game against Tennessee was on brand for the Ohio native.
According to FloridaGators.com, Meyer “lit up” when he learned that Florida would be playing Tennessee on the same day he was being honored by the Gators.
“The first thing I think about is Tennessee – we’ve got to beat Tennessee,” said Meyer. “That’s just the way I look at it when I first saw we were going to be invited back for the Tennessee game.”
I’m sure the Gators will play inspired football on Saturday night with Meyer and the Vols in town.
Tennessee will have to find a way to match that energy if they’re going to win in Gainesville for the first time since 2003.
