To the surprise of absolutely no one, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel didn’t reveal on Monday during his weekly press conference who the Vols’ starting quarterback will be on Saturday against Arkansas.

Anyone who has watched Heupel talk to the media over the last several years knew there was very little chance he was going to reveal that information on Monday.

What Heupel did do, though, is make Tennessee’s quarterback situation even more confusing.

Heupel benched starter Faizon Brandon in the second quarter of the Vols’ win over Auburn last Saturday. He was replaced by George MacIntyre.

At halftime, Heupel told ESPN that that Brandon “wasn’t operating” and “didn’t feel 100 percent.”

After the game, however, Heupel downplayed the idea that Brandon’s injury (which he suffered the previous week against Texas) played a factor in the decision.

“I don’t know that I would say that,” said Heupel when asked if Brandon’s performance was affected by the injury he suffered in the Texas game. “Ultimately we’ll watch a little bit of the tape and see more of it, but we’ll go from there.”

On Monday, Heupel changed his tune and said that the injury did affect Brandon against Auburn.

“Faizon obviously wasn’t at his best,” said Heupel. “He was dealing with getting injured in the Texas game. It was affecting his game.”

Heupel’s comments on Monday led to some questions that we don’t have answers for quite yet.

Does Heupel think Brandon is still the best option when healthy? To what extent does Heupel think the injury was the reason for Brandon’s struggles? What factor will health play in the decision to name a starter for the Arkansas game?

Heupel doesn’t seem interested in answering any of those questions, which means we’re probably going to have to wait until Saturday to find out what Tennessee’s quarterback plan will look like against Arkansas.
