The Tennessee Vols unofficially locked up a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff on Saturday via their 36-23 win against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Tennessee finished the regular season with a 10-2 record with key wins over Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt.
The Vols know they're in the playoff, but they aren't sure yet who they'll play or if they'll host a home playoff game. We won't know how the full picture looks until after the conference championship games next weekend.
For now, ESPN has Tennessee ranked as the No. 7 seed in their projected playoff rankings, just behind Ohio State and just ahead of SMU and Indiana.
From ESPN: Tennessee should be in the CFP, it's just a matter of where and if it will earn a first-round home game as one of the teams seeded Nos. 5 through 8. All it can do is wait and watch the SEC title game to see how Georgia fares and how it might impact Tennessee's final ranking.
In ESPN's projected bracket, the Vols are the No. 9 seed (due to being jumped by projected conference winners SMU and Boise State). That means they would play on the road in the first round.
ESPN has Tennessee facing Ohio State in Columbus in that first round matchup.
There's a really good chance that the committee sees it the same way as ESPN on Tuesday night when the new rankings are revealed. But it's important to remember that these won't be the final rankings.
Conference championship weekend could create some chaos and potentially propel Tennessee into a home playoff game, so there's still hope for a December playoff game in Neyland Stadium.
