The New Orleans Saints are now playing for a better record. They aren’t playing for playoff hopes or a draft pick.

Now, it’s about developing young talent and figuring out an identity they want to stick with going into next year.

So, in order to do that, they have to play well on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, who are also struggling this year.

Even though the Rams are missing some key players on offense, that is what their identity is. They like to play through the air rather than on the ground, and still have some good receivers outside of Cooper Kupp.

In other words, the Saints’ secondary has to step up.

“Oh they have a big secondary,” Rams’ receiver Allen Robinson said. “On the outside, they have tall corners. They have experience on the back end with Tyrann Mathieu and Marcus Maye. So, they have a lot of experience back there. You know, and even at linebacker with [Demario] Davis kind of leading that bunch.”

If they take away the game through the air, the Saints need to be prepared for the run as well. Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers can break off a big play at any moment, even if they haven’t done a ton of that so far this season.

That starts with the guys up front.

“They have a lot of guys who have played a lot of football, and the same with upfront in Cam Jordan,” Robinson said. “So, they have a lot of guys. For us, it’s just going to be about staying locked in. Communication. And just trying to put together a good cohesive group on Sunday to go out there and execute.”

Allen Robinson is giving a lot of unexpected praise to this Saints’ defense. Why? I’m not sure, to be honest. Maybe he hasn’t watched the team a ton this season.

While, yes, the Saints have names on defense, the defense as a whole hasn’t been great. They allow the eighth-most points per game at 24.7.

The Saints’ secondary has just two interceptions this year, which is the lowest in the league.

This defense isn’t good, but the Saints will likely take any compliment they can take. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t win on Sunday.
