The New York Giants still have an intriguing situation with star running back Saquon Barkley. The team has him under the franchise tag to keep him for this season. That being said, he has made it clear that he wants a long-term extension. You can't blame him. He has been the rock for their offense over the past few years and deserves stability alongside a nice payday among his peers.

The two sides now have less than a week to reach a long-term deal. Barkley is one of four players in this situation around the NFL, joining Raiders RB Josh Jacobs, Cowboy RB Tony Pollard, and Jaguars TE Evan Engram. According to Dianna Russini, Barkley may not play in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys if he remains only under the franchise tag.

Of course, the long-term is the biggest concern for New York. If Barkley is in their plans, then they need to find a middle ground with him. He has been their best offensive player for most of his pro career.

For this season, that opening matchup could be massive for both teams involved. The Philadelphia Eagles are considered division favorites, but both the Giants and the Cowboys look like they will be potential playoff teams, too. New York will want their star running back for that rivalry game.
