Trey McBride’s exchange with official on sidelines goes viral—and one first-hand account only makes things worse
Arizona Cardinals TE Trey McBride had an exchange with an official go viral on Sunday for all the wrong reasons. But a first-hand account makes things that much worse.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a wilder on-field moment involving a referee than the one that just happened on Sunday involving Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride.
McBride appeared on camera receiving expletives from an official while standing along the sideline. The exchange has grown legs and spread quickly across the internet. The clip, which ended with a McBride smile and point to the camera, even drew the attention of the NFLPA Executive Director, JC Tretter. Tretter condemned the official’s behavior.
Sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala was within earshot of the whole thing. And her account of the buildup to this viral moment only makes things worse for the zebra involved.

“The harshest (McBride) got was, “You’re ruining the game.”

One thing I’d be willing to be about this storyline? We’re going to hear a whole lot about it over the course of the next few days. It raises all kinds of questions about objectivity and officiating. That can be an exceptionally slippery slope.
NFL officials are already the subject of plenty of criticism for their role and presence throughout the course of the game. Officiating can be overbearing at times, and it certainly felt that way throughout Week 4 across the NFL as well. But this? This is a whole different animal beyond being flag-happy. This creates a legitimate concern about bias in officiating. That is, of course, unless the same crew was throwing F-bombs at the New York Giants players and sideline on Sunday.
For this firestorm to get kicked up over pleading for a flag and a comment regarding the officiating impact of the game? That’s a pretty tough look. And it sounds like if the NFLPA gets their way, we won’t be getting much of a look at this official on an NFL sideline again any time soon.
