With just a few weeks until the new league year, the Bills have a huge offseason ahead of them.
Before then, though, let's open the envelopes for this week's mailbag.
Q: What do you think are Buffalo's most pressing needs?- Zach Vaughn, X
Weapons for Josh Allen undoubtedly. A legitimate 1a or 1b receiver to go along with Diggs out wide is priority No. 1. Whether that be via trade or in the first round of the draft, the Bills need receivers.
Q: Do the Bills need to move on from Sean McDermott to reach their full potential at quarterback?- Joshua Lysarz, X
I think this season could be McDermott's last in Buffalo if they don't make a deep run in the playoffs. Even if they do get to the AFC Championship Game and lose to Kansas City or Cincinnati again, that should be where they pull the plug and pursue the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Q: Would you rather the Bills played Tre'Davious White at CB and Christian Benford at safety if it got the five best defensive backs on the field or start Benford at cornerback and draft a rookie safety/move a backup to starter to replace Hyde?- The Big Dumb QB Haver, X
I'm in the boat of Buffalo needing to cut or trade White. They need to free up cap space, and Rasul Douglas and Benford are a very good starting cornerback tandem. From there, I'd sign someone like a Kam Curl from Washington and look to bring back Taylor Rapp, as well as a draft pick at the position. Jordan Whitehead could also be a name to watch. Eddie Jackson, as well, if the price is right.
Q: Where do the Bills even start with their cap issues?- Jeseph Meyers, Threads
In terms of what they could do to free up space, this is what I would do:
- Cut/trade Tre'Davious White
- Cut/trade Jordan Poyer
- Restructure Josh Allen's deal
- Restructure Stefon Diggs' deal
- Restructure Matt Milano's deal
- Cut Nyheim Hines
- Cut Deonte Harty
- Cut Sam Martin
That would take them out of the negative in terms of cap. Plus, if they convert some of Allen's deal into contract and roster bonuses, they can free up more. The same with other players to free up space. Regardless, there is a ton they need to do.
Q: Will the Bills rely more on free agency or the draft this offseason to replenish positions of need?- Ed Helinski, X
Brandon Beane isn't afraid to get aggressive. The Von Miller signing and Stefon Diggs trade prove that. They'll need to free up cap space and move money around, but I'd be shocked if they don't make at least one noteworthy move in free agency.
Q: Do you trade your first round pick for a receiver or go the cost-controlled route and just draft one?- N Spo, X
This comes back to freeing up cap space, but if the Bills can acquire Terry McLaurin or Brandon Aiyuk, I'd trade the first-round pick for either of those two and then draft another receiver.
