Bears HC Ben Johnson sends definitive message on Chicago’s QB hierarchy after Tyson Bagent leads win over the Jets

The Chicago Bears made a controversial decision in Week 4 turning to Tyson Bagent over Case Keenum at quarterback, but the results turned out the same way for head coach Ben Johnson.

The Chicago Bears’ quarterback situation took another turn in Week 4 against the New York Jets with Tyson Bagent running the offense in Sunday, six days after Case Keenum led the Bears to a big win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Bears have now won three games this season with three different quarterbacks at the helm of head coach Ben Johnson’s offense. It’s a major statement by Johnson to be able to pull that off in the first place, even if the decision to turn to Bagent was a controversial one.

Given how Keenum played last Monday, many thought the 38-year-old veteran earned the right to start again against the Jets. Instead, Johnson decided to show how much confidence he had in Bagent being the team’s true QB2, even if Keenum was credited with the start on Sunday after taking the opening snap.

“Well, I got all of these memos saying that Tyson was starting before I ever made an announcement, so I wanted to get Case out there for the first snap. It was like his ceremonial first pitch out there handing off the torch,” Johnson joked.

Ben Johnson’s confidence in Tyson Bagent is real and he felt strongly about his performance in Week 4

After that opening play, Bagent took the reigns over for the Bears offense for the remainder of the game. Bagent threw for 268 yards in the 23-12 win, leading the offense to 34 first downs and staying ahead of the sticks all day long. The Bears never punted for the first time since 2014 and totaled nearly 500 yards of offense, albeit most of it came from a strong run game led by Kyle Monangai.

Even still, Bagent’s command running the unit proved why Johnson had so much confidence in going to a third QB in a three-game span. And Johnson made it clear where he stands on Bagent moving forward in the QB hierarchy.

“Tyson’s earned the right to be our number two quarterback,” Johnson said after the game. “I have a lot of confidence in him and thought he played pretty well today. Efficient with the football, obviously he had the one pick – left the ball a little bit behind where he’d like to go with it, but other than that I thought he did a great job with the operation.”

Two particular moments really stood out to Johnson. The end of half drive in which Bagent led the offense down the field on an 11 play drive to score three points, and the final drive of the game that ate up over nine minutes of clock on 18 plays.

“He did a great job,” Johnson added of Bagent. “He was poised, he was under control. They were bringing a lot of pressure – like we knew that they could do – and yet he was able to stand in that pocket and deliver some good balls today.”

There is no more QB controversy in Chicago, and now we see when Caleb Williams can return to practice

After Johnson’s postgame comments from Week 3 and Week 4’s wins, there is no quarterback controversy in Chicago. Caleb Williams (when healthy) is the starter, Tyson Bagent is the immediate backup the team is highly confident in, and Case Keenum is the veteran third string that can win big-time games. That’s a real luxury for a team to have.

And now, coming out of this game, there shouldn’t be a question of who Ben Johnson trusts to run his offense. The answer is all three of them.

When all three are healthy, though, Williams is undoubtedly the guy for the Bears. We’ll see if Williams can practice this week for the first time since injuring his hamstring in Week 2 and how much work he can actually get in throughout the week.

If it’s not enough to for Williams return to action next Sunday, the Bears will continue to roll with Bagent as the starter in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers and feel pretty good about that plan.
