Bears finally open the door for one of their top defenders to eventually return right as the defense starts to catch fire

Chicago Bears nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon has been away from the team facility rehabbing a frustrating calf injury, and now the door is open for him to earn his way back onto the 53-man roster.

The Chicago Bears are preparing for their Week 4 matchup against the New York Jets, and the defense has given the team plenty of reasons for optimism.

The game plans defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has put together over the last two weeks, combined with strong execution from the players on the field, have produced encouraging results for this team.

“Proof is in the pudding when we go out there and execute how we know we can,” head coach Ben Johnson said. “Just staying aggressive. I think for us, the mindset and game plan was to have energy and execute and just go out there and be aggressive.”

Now, the Bears have opened the door for that unit to get even better with one of the team’s top defenders able to finally return to practice.

Chicago has officially activated the 21-day practice window for nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon, who has been away from the team facility training with his own personal trainers while recovering from a calf injury that limited him for the majority of the 2025 season.

Kyler Gordon’s long road back and a frustrating disconnect with the organization

Last week, head coach Ben Johnson offered no update on Gordon’s status despite opening the practice window for defensive lineman Shamar Turner and linebacker Noah Sewell.

The Bears head coach has been tight-lipped about Gordon’s situation throughout basically the entire year. Gordon’s calf injury has created a lot of back and forth between him and the team regarding how both sides feel about his status and the extent of the injury. General manager Ryan Poles spoke at length before the 2026 season about what Gordon has been dealing with and where some of that disconnect lies.

But, this is a significant first step toward getting Gordon back in the fold. It is not a guarantee that he will return in 2026 or slot back into the starting lineup as soon as he is cleared, but the Bears making this move now signals real progress is being made in his recovery and the team is open to welcoming him back.

What the timeline looks like from here for Kyler Gordon

Gordon cannot play until Week 5 at the earliest against the Green Bay Packers, but the move today opens the window for him to return to practice with his teammates. If Gordon is not cleared and activated back to the 53-man roster by the end of that 21-day window, he cannot play for the remainder of the 2026 season.

It may get to that point. It may not. Ideally, Gordon gets back on the practice field, works his way into game-day action, and begins to re-establish the trust he has largely lost from the coaching staff.

Why Kyler Gordon’s return would matter for Chicago’s defense

Gordon is one of the top nickel corners in the league. His instincts are absolutely incredible, both in coverage and against the run. With the injuries the Bears have dealt with across the secondary going back to training camp, seeing No. 6 back on the field would be a welcome sight.

The coaching staff and players still view him as one of the better defenders on this team, and he has played at that level over the last few years when healthy. Staying healthy, however, has been the issue.

With the practice window has been opened, it certainly seems like Gordon and his personal trainers feel he has progressed well enough in his recovery to take this next step OR the Bears are sending the message that enough is enough, get back on the field in the next 21 days.

The waiting game truly continues though on whether this move translates to a roster activation and a return on Sundays. But, this is at least a step forward for Gordon and the Bears after a lot of setbacks over the last few months.
