NFL insider confirms suspicion when it comes to the Cleveland Browns’ interest level in Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby
There’s a potential quarterback domino that could still fall in the NFL this summer. Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby could enter the supplemental draft, and an NFL insider has the latest update on where the Cleveland Browns stand on the idea.
The Cleveland Browns are having an offseason quarterback competition to find out who is going to be the starter in head coach Todd Monken’s offense. There’s a full quarterback room in Cleveland, especially after taking Taylen Green as a sixth-round pick a couple of weeks ago.
Cleveland already has Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders both at the top of the depth chart battling for the job. OTAs are going to be important and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we came out of mandatory minicamp with a starter named.
Until the Browns have a capable starting quarterback and it shows on the field, they’re going to be connected to every player at the position becoming available. The possibility of Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby playing in the NFL next season is no different.
NFL insider gives Browns’ update on QB Brendan Sorsby
There’s a chance Sorsby ends up in the supplemental draft this summer with his college football eligibility in major jeopardy with an invitation into gambling underway. But with the Browns’ current QB room, it doesn’t appear they’re going to give up a future pick for the former Cincinnati Bearcats transfer.
“As far as the Browns go, I would take the meme with the dog with the laser just like … that’s Browns fans anytime a quarterback that can even throw the ball, that’s how they act,” ESPN’s Peter Schrager said on The Pat McAfee Show recently. “I’m told Browns right now, Sorsby’s name has not been in the conversation. Rather, they’re focused on what they have in-house at the moment. That is a Deshaun Watson revival, that is a Shedeur Sanders, can he do it again, can he get back on the field and win this job?
“They are so ecstatic about the draft they had in the last couple of weeks, I don’t know if Sorsby dropped into it is an actual legitimate thing right now.”
Browns’ 2026 quarterback outlook is clear
Cleveland already has the three quarterbacks mentioned plus Dillon Gabriel on the roster. The Browns are either cutting or trading Gabriel or Sanders before the season, and that’s already a tough choice to make. If Sorsby were to enter into the picture, the Browns would be saying goodbye to both the quarterbacks they drafted last year. Cleveland isn’t cutting Green and they can’t part ways with Watson until after this season.
The Browns might need all the draft capital they can have to move up for a quarterback in the next draft cycle. The 2027 NFL Draft is expected to be strong at the quarterback position, and that is another part of this making it easy for the Browns to pass on Sorsby.
Unless it’s a Day 3 pick being put up for Sorsby, it doesn’t make much sense for the Browns. When then, it still feels unlikely with the team wanting what they currently have to play out in 2026. If Sorsby is in the NFL next season, don’t expect it to be a return to Ohio to play football.
