Brian Schottenheimer wastes no time sending message about Dallas Cowboys rookie sensation following breakout performance
Dallas Cowboys undrafted rookie wide receiver Camden Brown scored the team’s two touchdowns on Saturday night. But head coach Brian Schottenheimer wants to see more.
Dallas Cowboys fans unfamiliar with undrafted rookie wide receiver Camden Brown may have been surprised by his two-touchdown performance on Saturday night. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, though? Not so much.
“The game’s not too big for him,” Schottenheimer told reporters following the win. “He does it every day in practice. We see it all the time.”
But that doesn’t necessarily means his roster spot is secured. At least not according to the Cowboys coach. Let’s dive into what Schottenheimer had to say about Brown postgame.
Brown’s big night earns him praise
Brown, a training camp standout, introduced himself to fans with a three-catch, 62-yard, two touchdown performance during the Cowboys’ 17-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Each of his scores came from different quarterbacks: A 39-yard shot into the end zone from Sam Howell, and a fade from Joe Milton that he brought down one-handed.
“He’s been doing that the whole time,” Schottenheimer said. “What I love about him is he does the little things too. You watch him on special teams, in one-on-one drills, things like that, he realizes that’s how you make this football team.”
Brown made the Cowboys 53? Not so fast
Though Schottenheimer had a glowing review waiting for Brown at the end of the game, he took a chance to make things very clear. He has not secured a spot. But he did lay out what needs to happen for him to be on the Cowboys 53-man roster.
“Really good day, but he’s got to keep stacking (good days),” Schottenheimer added.
The Cowboys are headed back to Oxnard, California, and have a joint practice scheduled against the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday. After that, there are two more preseason games on the schedule. So Brown will have a chance.
Right now, his biggest competition is veteran Jonathan Mingo, who had a very decent game himself with two catches for 20 yards. As of today, the Cowboys wide receiver room has four virtual locks; CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, KaVontae Turpin, and Ryan Flournoy.
If Brown keeps playing like he did Saturday night, he’ll earn his place on that list. My take? He makes the team when it’s all said and done.
