Caelen Carson’s career with the Dallas Cowboys is a difficult one to evaluate. Injuries have played a major role in that but also the fact that Christian Parker will be his third defensive coordinator in three years.

However, it’s possible Carson got off on the right foot with Parker based on what we know from the offseason program. So what’s next for Carson going into this year’s Cowboys training camp? Let’s take a look in this latest edition of Cowboys player profile.

Caelen Carson player profile

  • Age: 24
  • Year: 3rd
  • Position: Cornerback
  • College: Wake Forest
  • Jersey Number: 21

Carson was picked in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and thus enters a crucial preseason. So far, it’s been a roller coaster of a career. Cowboys injuries forced Carson to start in Week 1 of his rookie season. Later, he’d be the one suffering injuries. In two years in the league, he’s gone through shoulder, neck, and hamstring injuries. He’s played in 14 of a possible 34 games.

That makes Carson a difficult evaluation going into 2026. But here’s what we know from him: He’s versatile, solid in coverage and a good tackler. The thing he needs to overcome is his speed, which was what knocked him down to Day 3 of the 2024 draft.

Contract details

Carson is entering Year 3 of his rookie deal and is set to make $1,075,000 in base salary. His cap number sits at $1,138,569 via Over the Cap. His financials are likely to be irrelevant when the Cowboys make a decision come roster cutdown day. Speaking of…

Roster outlook

Carson’s future will likely be determined by his performance in training camp and the preseason. It just feels like we don’t know enough about him yet, especially because of the early injuries.

However, he appears to be in a good spot so far. One of the biggest surprises from the Cowboys offseason program, to me, was Caelen Carson taking first-team reps while DaRon Bland was out.

If Carson can prove a versatile player for Parker, and someone who can diagnose plays well, he’ll earn a spot as a backup.

To me, roster locks at cornerback for the Cowboys include DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr., and Devin Moore (fourth-round rookie). There may be only one more spot for grabs and it will come down to the likes of Carson, Reddy Steward, Josh Butler, Derion Kendrick, and others.
