The Denver Broncos just made one of the biggest moves of the offseason – trading for head coach Sean Payton, to help turn their franchise around.
They traded a 2023 first-round pick, and future assets for the former New Orleans Saints head coach. Now the question is will it work? We thought Hackett and Russell Wilson would work, but it obviously didn't.
But, there is a much higher chance of Payton working because of his past, and one former NFL player and now NFL analyst thinks so too. Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, thinks this hire was too good.
"I'm very confident. I mean the biggest thing is this, you know, Shawn's gifts, one of them and all great coaches, I feel like do this, it's your ability to adapt and to understand the player and put him in the best position possible. I think Shawn's done that well for a long time. You got to remember New Orleans was in New Orleans and we got to give us a ton of credit. Right? Well somebody evaluated drew Brees and brought him in I think sean papers right at the top of that list because they came in, I believe in those six together, the first year they go to the NFC championship. If memory serves me correctly and you sit there and you look at it and nobody would have predicted that. I mean that's not what they say. They're a nice solid team a little bit here and there. But he's gonna come in and make the game simple. He's gonna make it easier for us on the way.
"He thinks he's also gonna come in and this offense shoot him and so now Russ is gonna have to, you know, do things correctly and blah blah because Shawn's gonna count, he's gonna walk in the day when he's like everyone's starting over from scratch. We're evaluating everyone from coaches, you know to players, everybody from traders, equipment room guys and he's gonna go in there and find out who's willing to put the time in, who's willing to commit and he's going to actually run this stuff but he's not gonna try his offense from New Orleans and go green that there, he's gonna take parts of it. He's gonna see what rust does well. And then he's gonna go ahead and more for some other things from Seattle plus what he did last year and look at the trends in the league this year. And I think you'll find that he'll turn that around pretty quickly."
Romo is completely right in that Payton turned around the Saints. That franchise as we know them today was not very good, at all. Drew Brees didn't work out in San Diego and Payton fixed him.
Hopefully, Payton can do the same with the broncos and Wilson. Will it happen right away? Probably not. But it will happen. Fans just have to be patient, and good things can come. Romo knows what he is talking about and is considered one of the brightest football minds out there.
