Denver Broncos cornerback Riley Moss is entering a contract year.

He’s also expected to be a key part of a defense that could be the best in the NFL.

Combine all of that with the Broncos’ clear goal of reaching the Super Bowl, and it’s safe to say that it’s the most important year of Moss’ football career.

One way that Moss can ensure that he has a terrific year, and secures the big contract he’s undoubtedly hoping to get, is to cut down on penalties.

Moss drew 10 accepted penalties for 203 yards last season. Eight of those penalties were for defensive pass interference. He was one of the most-flagged defensive backs in the NFL.

Excessive penalties can often frustrate teammates. (Is there anything worse than a defensive penalty that gives the opposing offense a second life?).

Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga, however, thinks NFL officials were “trigger happy” with Moss last season.

“The refs were very trigger happy when it comes to the flags with him,” said Hufanga. “But he is a guy that works really hard. I got to work out a lot with him this offseason, and just seeing the details — he’s a very athletic human being. A lot of people kind of discredit it because it’s the white cornerback. I’m not gonna say that, but that’s what everybody else says. But he is probably actually one of the most athletic corners I’ve ever been around.”

I don’t understand why every defensive pass interference isn’t reviewed. It has the same impact on the game as a completed pass, so why not make it reviewable?

It’s probably because it’s such a subjective call. Either way, Broncos fans are certainly hoping Moss isn’t flagged nearly as much in 2026.
