Dan Campbell gives his clearest answer yet on Kerby Joseph’s 2026 status, and it raises one big question for the Lions

Campbell finally gave a direct answer about whether Joseph will play this season. Now the mystery shifts from if the All-Pro safety returns to when Detroit will finally put him back on the field.

The Detroit Lions are past the bye week, and getting safety Brian Branch back against the Green Bay Packers is going to be huge. The bigger question hanging over the Lions’ secondary has been the status of safety Kerby Joseph.

Detroit finally got a direct answer on that one.

Things didn’t look good earlier in the month, around late September. My feeling at the time was that we might not see Joseph again this year. That was only a feeling. It didn’t come from a report or any inside information.

It came from listening to Lions coach Dan Campbell. He said things like he couldn’t say anything that would make reporters happy, and he sounded down on the whole situation.

Dan Campbell finally gets the simple question

Reporters asked Campbell on Tuesday whether he expects Joseph to play in 2026. It may have been the first time anyone had asked him that so plainly.

His answer was firm: “I do.”

That’s a big deal. Campbell didn’t dance around it. He also gave reporters more on where the safety stands:

“Doing well. I’ll leave it at that. Really is, he’s doing a good job. I’m not going to give you a timetable, but I’ve been pleased with where he’s at. He’s got a headspace right now, which is great because that’s hard. You’re coming off this, you’re wanting to go, and you’re working at it. At some point, it’s time for football, and we all know that and recognize it. But we’ll take it one day at a time.”

When will Kerby Joseph return to practice?

Campbell expects Joseph to play, so the next question is when.

The Lions still haven’t put him back on the practice field. That has been one of my biggest concerns. How do you know what this knee can do if you haven’t tested it in practice?

I’m sure Detroit has tested it internally. Still, we haven’t seen Joseph get through a full week of practice. He hasn’t practiced since last season, and he hasn’t played in over a year.

That’s why the line about it being time for football stood out.

I took it as the Lions acknowledging something important. They’ve done the rehab and put in the work with trainers. At some point, you have to put him out there and see what happens.

It feels like that time is coming.

A guess at Kerby Joseph’s timeline

If I had to guess, and this is just a guess, Joseph doesn’t play until December.

I think the Lions get through November, see where they stand in the playoff race, and then rip it off like a Band-Aid.

That means putting him out there and watching what happens. Then you find out what Joseph can do, how much of it he can do, and you get your answers.

Again, that’s only my guess. Campbell didn’t give a timetable, and the Lions haven’t said December.

For now, it’s a significant update just to know Detroit expects him to play this year. The team isn’t treating this as a maybe-he-does, maybe-he-doesn’t situation.

Campbell said point-blank that he expects Joseph back.

Now we wait to see when that happens and how much of him the Lions get.
