The work of an important member of the Detroit Lions is deservedly getting recognized for his impeccable work over the past year.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes was named the Pro Football Writers of America's 2023 NFL Executive of the Year.
Many scrutinized the Lions 2023 NFL Draft class from the moment their first pick was announced, as RB Jahmyr Gibbs out of Alabama with the 12th pick. And the criticism didn't stop there, as many believed the Lions drafted poorly due to positional value and "experts" rankings of last year's class.
But now, who is the one laughing? Probably Holmes and the Lions after finishing 2023 with one of the best draft classes in the NFL.
Notable 2023 Draft Picks:
- Round 1, Pick 12: Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama
- Round 1, Pick 18: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa
- Round 2, Pick 34: Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
- Round 2 Pick 45: Brian Branch, CB, Alabama
Pairing this impactful draft class with Holmes' hits in free agency this past summer, it shouldn't surprise anyone that he received this award.
Notable Lions 2023 Free Agent Signings:
- C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Safety
- David Montgomery, RB
- Cameron Sutton, CB
Holme's job as the Lions' GM is to do everything in his power to build the best roster possible. And it's hard to say what he could have done better over the past year. The roster he built finished the regular season tied with an NFC-best record of 12- 5, which earned them the third seed. After two playoff wins, they are preparing to play in the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.
