The Lions’ latest roster moves answered several questions we’ve been asking
A bunch of questions we needed answers to just got answered by the Lions with just three roster moves.
The Detroit Lions just made three roster moves on Tuesday, and they answer a ton of questions the Lions have given everyone since Sunday, when they cut down to their initial 53-man roster. Let’s talk about it.
Isiah Pacheco is heading to IR, and that’s why the Lions carried five running backs
We’ve talked in some articles or videos about how this could possibly be a thing. Now we know it’s happening. Pacheco went out with a knee injury about midway through training camp, and then Dan Campbell added last week that there were some concerns about his back as well.
So the Lions had to get him on the roster to get him into one of those IR return spots. So the Lions’ running backs to start the season are Jahmyr Gibbs, Sione Vaki, Jacob Saylors, and Jabari Small.
This also answers why the Lions brought in Kareem Hunt for a workout a few weeks ago, but it also adds another question to the fold, and that is: are the Lions going to keep looking out for running backs in the next few weeks?
What happened with Tyler Conklin?
We kept talking about Greg Dortch like he was the veteran that the Lions were doing the handshake deal with to go away for a minute while they get the IR guys onto the roster to get them to IR, but it was Conklin all along. He’s now back on the 53-man roster.
The question coming from this one is where he fits on the depth chart, and what does this mean for Jackson Meeks? Before today, it seemed Meeks was in line for a very big spot. Now, it would seem he’s going to keep learning in the background a little more.
Who gets the final practice squad spot?
The Lions are bringing back receiver Dominic Lovett to fill in the 16th and final practice squad spot. He’s going to get a chance to show Dan Campbell the consistency he requested to see from Lovett a couple of weeks ago.
The new question is: Are the Lions about to do the return-man competition right here in front of us during the season with practice squad guys? Think about it: all the combatants are right there. Tom Kennedy, Lovett, and Lucky Jackson. Then you have Vaki and Small on the 53. The Lions are going to try some stuff. The biggest question is: why didn’t the Lions keep Greg Dortch?
