The Cleveland Browns’ defense looks more like its 2023 version than its 2024 version through a couple of games this season, and that’s good news. Cleveland has lost a couple of defenders already, with CB Martin Emerson Jr. and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah missing this season due to injury. They’ve had new players step up, like rookies like LB Carson Schwesinger and DT Mason Graham. However, it hasn’t been all good news for young players trying to step up for the Browns.

Browns CB Cameron Mitchell fined by the NFL after tough game vs. Baltimore Ravens

With Cleveland already down Emerson, they have moved Greg Newsome II back outside this season, and things have gone mostly well with that move. However, it has challenged Cleveland’s depth, especially in times when they don’t have a player like CB Denzel Ward out there, who had to miss time against Baltimore.

Mitchell played 23 snaps as an outside corner for the Browns against the Ravens and gave up three touchdowns. Now, Mitchell has been fined for a play he made against the Baltimore Ravens.

The NFL fined Mitchell $6,191 for a low block he had, and it was categorized as unnecessary roughness. The third-year Browns cornerback went low to eliminate the fullback on an outside run by Ravens RB Derrick Henry. There was no flag thrown on the play during the game; it was something that was looked back at afterwards. Mitchell made one tackle against Baltimore, who went his way four times, and Mitchell gave up three catches for 40 yards, per Pro Football Focus.

Mitchell was a fifth-round pick by the Browns in 2023, and they’re now looking to push him into a role in 2025, but it’s just not working yet. The Browns’ cornerback is playing in his 33rd game with the Browns on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, who are going to sling the ball around with Jordan Love.

Cleveland expects a healthy Ward out there this week, so that could mean Mitchell seeing some time back inside as a slot corner. After a rough game and then being fined, Mitchell could badly use a good showing against Green Bay.
