Packers won’t see 2 familiar faces later this season after Week 6 injuries hit receiver rooms around the NFL

Two wide receivers who played extensively in Green Bay went down in Week 6, and the timing lines up badly for their teams’ upcoming games against the Packers.

Two former Green Bay Packers wide receivers suffered injuries in Week 6, and most certainly neither will be on the field when their new teams face Green Bay later this season. The injuries hit the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, two opponents still ahead on the Packers’ schedule. Both teams are now left with thin wide receiver rooms behind their top options.

The first is Rams wide receiver Davante Adams. The former Packers star ruptured his hamstring, and the timing makes it hard for him to return ahead of the matchup with his old team. Meanwhile, New England Patriots receiver Romeo Doubs is already ruled out for the Green Bay game.

Davante Adams might not make it back for the Packers game

Adams is expected to miss six to 10 weeks with the hamstring injury. Even if he returns on the short end of that projected timeline, he wouldn’t be available against Green Bay. There’s a chance he returns after the Rams’ bye in Week 11, but it would be the most optimistic scenario.

The Packers and Rams meet on Nov. 25 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Week 12 matchup falls on a Wednesday, on the eve of Thanksgiving. Most likely, there won’t be enough time for Adams to recover before that game, so Los Angeles will be without its second-most important wide receiver.

The Rams still have Puka Nacua, who remains one of the most dangerous receivers in the NFL. Beyond him, though, the depth is a real concern. The rest of the room features Tutu Atwell, Konata Mumpfield, Jordan Whittington, and Alex Bachman.

That is a limited group once you get past the top two. With Adams sidelined, the Rams will lean even harder on Nacua, and Green Bay’s secondary can tilt its attention toward him without worrying as much about the other side of the field, even though Los Angeles still has a strong group of tight ends.

Romeo Doubs lands on injured reserve

The second former Packers receiver is Romeo Doubs, now with the New England Patriots after signing there in free agency. Doubs suffered a shoulder injury in the Patriots’ win over the New York Jets on Sunday, and New England placed him on injured reserve.

A trip to IR means Doubs will miss at least four games. The Packers face the Patriots in Week 9 on Nov. 8, so there aren’t enough games on the calendar for Doubs to clear that window. Therefore, he won’t face his former team either.

The situation in New England looks similar to the one in Los Angeles. The Patriots have A.J. Brown as their primary wide receiver, but the depth behind him is thin. The only other wide receivers on their 53-man roster are DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III.

That’s a limited group for New England to work with, at least for now. The Patriots could make additional moves at the position before the Packers game, but the current roster doesn’t offer much support for Brown.

Green Bay won’t see impactful familiar faces

For the Packers, the outcome is the same in both cases. Two receivers who played extensively in Green Bay, and who know at least part of the defensive personnel from their time in the building, won’t be on the other side when these games arrive.

Both opponents still have a true No. 1 option in Nacua and Brown. What comes after them is where the gap shows. With Adams and Doubs out, the Rams and Patriots will be forced to rely on depth pieces who haven’t proven they can carry a meaningful share of the passing game, and that gives the Packers’ defense a clearer plan of attack in both matchups.
