Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives injury update after preseason Week 1 loss to Los Angeles Rams
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters that the team escaped the preseason Week 1 loss with a single injury to speak of.
The most important thing in the preseason, outside of roster evaluation, is health. The Kansas City Chiefs escaped their preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams relatively unscathed.
Speaking to reporters after the preseason Week 1 game, Andy Reid confirmed a single injury. Reserve offensive lineman Chu Godrick, an international player, suffered an ankle sprain.
“As far as the injuries go, it was just Chu (Godrick) had an ankle sprain,” Reid said. “So, other than that, there were no other injuries.”
Godrick was deemed questionable to return with an ankle injury during the fourth quarter of the game.
Chiefs rookies Garrett Nussmeier and Jadon Canady OK after injury scares
The team had a couple of injury scares involving some rookies. Garrett Nussmeier had a strong performance, but it almost went awry.
After a blown assignment, Nussmeier was sacked for a 13-yard loss. He went down of his own accord, but came down rather awkwardly and was limping around the field after the play. The Chiefs called a timeout and were about to put Chris Oladokun in the game. However, Nussmeier threw some dirt on it and stayed in the game to finish out the drive.
“Yeah, again, another one of the young guys,” Reid said of Nussmeier. “I thought he did some nice things. There are a couple things he’s got to work on, but I would have expected that coming out. But I thought for his first time out there rolling, thought he handled it well. Made some nice throws. Had some long yardage situations that he had to get himself out of, and did a good job there.”
He also clearly showed some toughness.
As for Jadon Canady, he was slow to get up after a collision near the Rams’ sideline. He was taken out of the game for concussion evaluation by the NFL’s spotters. He was seen emerging from the blue medical tent with his helmet, suggesting he cleared concussion protocol.
Overall, this is about the best injury news you can hope for coming out of the preseason. Reid said that they didn’t even have players who cramped up during the game, which is always a big positive as well. The team is well-conditioned after a tough training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. With four practices left, they should be inching closer to full participation.
