The Kansas City Chiefs begin their first group of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) practices on Tuesday, May 27.

With Phase III of the offseason underway, the team will soon release an updated 90-man roster featuring all the newly assigned jersey numbers. With a few exceptions, most players, including free agents, draft picks, and undrafted free agents, have already been assigned jersey numbers as of Monday, May 26. We'll have more updates to come on Tuesday.

How do the NFL's jersey number rules work during the offseason?

It's important to remember the NFL allows for duplicate jersey numbers during the offseason, with one repeat jersey number on defense and one on offense. The Chiefs are among the few teams with 10 or more retired jersey numbers, meaning they often have a jersey number crunch on the 90-man offseason roster. Here's a look at the team's retired jersey numbers:

  • 3. K Jan Stenerud
  • 16. QB Len Dawson
  • 18. CB Emmitt Thomas
  • 28. RB Abner Haynes
  • 36. RB Mack Lee Hill
  • 33. RB Stone Johnson
  • 37. RB Joe Delaney*
  • 58. DE Derrick Thomas
  • 63. LB Willie Lanier
  • 78. LB Bobby Bell
  • 86. DT Buck Buchanan

*Delaney's number is not officially retired, but has not been worn since his death.

As for the numbers that players at particular positions are allowed to wear, the NFL opened things up quite a bit ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

  • Quarterbacks: 0-19
  • Specialists: 0-49 and 90-99
  • Defensive backs: 0-49
  • Running backs, fullbacks, and H-Backs: 0-49 and 80-99
  • Tight ends: 0-49 and 80-99
  • Wide receivers: 0-49 and 80-99
  • Offensive linemen: 50-79
  • Defensive linemen: 50-79 and 90-99
  • Linebackers: 0-59 and 90-99

With all that in mind, here's the latest updated 90-man offseason roster, organized by jersey number.

Key: Draft picks (Italicized/Bold), UDFAs (Italicized/Asterisk)

Notes:

  • With Ashton Gillotte being assigned No. 97, it's widely presumed that Felix Anudike-Uzomah will take his college number, No. 91. It's not yet confirmed, but I'm listing that above.
  • One of Bailey Zappe or Chris Oladokun will have to change their jersey number. Same goes for Jimmy Holiday and Justyn Ross. It's OK for Glendon Miller and Elijah Mitchell to share a number, as well as Brashard Smith and Chris Roland-Wallace, and again with Kareem Hunt and Eric Scott Jr., because they play on opposite sides of the ball. If either players with a duplicate number make the 53-man roster, one of those players will have to change their jersey number. I say this to say hold off on getting a Brashard Smith jersey.

Which Chiefs players haven't been assigned jersey numbers?

Free agent DT Jerry Tillery is the only player yet to receive a jersey number.

Which jersey numbers remain available for the Chiefs?

The following jersey numbers aren't among those the team has retired and remain available for the Chiefs now.

  • 0
  • 46
  • 53
  • 57

Remember that Kansas City has never let a player wear No. 0 since the NFL allowed players to wear the jersey number back in 2023.
