The Kansas City Chiefs did a great job of addressing their big defensive needs in the draft. However, there is only so much they can do before they have to also turn their attention to the offensive side of the ball. They drafted Peter Woods and R Mason Thomas to help fix the pass rush, but there’s still a big issue.

Injuries happen all the time in football, and unfortunately, they can happen at any time. If George Karlaftis were to go down with an injury, the Chiefs would likely be screwed at the edge position. They would then have a position group with no real experience. So, they need some more depth there, preferably a veteran guy.

Patrick Mahomes was just hosting his 15 and Mahomies Golf Event for Charity, and guess who was there golfing? None other than the perfect guy for the job, Cam Jordan, the former New Orleans Saints defensive end, who is currently a free agent. He would be the perfect Steve Spagnuolo fit in this defense. And even better—Jordan wouldn’t complain about not playing the entire game, or not playing enough.

He’s nearing retirement any year now, and he probably would like to chase a ring before he does so. Where better to do that than the Chiefs? Mahomes better have been persuading him there. Then again, maybe his being there is a big nothing burger. Regardless, they do need to do something about the position group.

Why the Chiefs need a veteran edge rusher

The Chiefs only have Felix Anudike-Uzomah, R Mason Thomas, Ashton Gillotte, and George Karlaftis at the edge position. Sure, they have guys behind them, but not anyone who’s ever played meaningful football snaps. If Karlaftis gets hurt, or R Mason Thomas/Gillotte gets hurt, they really are screwed.

Anudike-Uzomah has only played 550 career snaps in three years. Gillotte has just 485 career snaps on defense, and of course, Thomas has none, being that he’s a rookie. Jordan provides everything they need, and he still has some juice left. Jordan had a Pro Football Focus grade of 76, with 36 total pressures and 10 sacks last season. Now, Jordan did only have a Pass Rush Win Rate of 9.9%, which isn’t very good. However, he’s 37—no one is asking him to be his peak self.

Cam Jordan’s stats in 2025

  • 36 pressures
  • 10 sacks
  • 47 tackles
  • 15 QB hits
  • 9.9% PRWR

If the Chiefs got that exact production, their defense would be unbelievably efficient. And Jordan was good in the run game. He finished with an average tackle depth of 2.5 yards, which is very good. In other words, on average, the tackles he made were only 2.5 yards past the line of scrimmage. The lower that number is, the better.

Spotrac currently has his market value at about $6.8 APY. Kansas City only has about $7 million in available cap. So, some very good negotiating would be needed. But it would be worth it.
