A familiar face is returning to Kansas City on Monday night, but this time it’s to help defeat the Chiefs.

The Washington Commanders found themselves in a pickle when kicker Matt Gay popped up on the injury report on Saturday with a back injury. It turns out that he will not be able to play against Kansas City in Week 8’s primetime matchup

Commanders sign K Matthew Wright to play against the Chiefs on Monday Night Football

Washington signed Wright and immediately elevated him to the 53-man roster to fill in for Gay on Monday night. Wright is a six-year veteran who has played for 10 NFL teams and one XFL franchise (Tampa Bay Vipers in 2020).

Chiefs fans remember Wright well, as he has had two stints in Kansas City — appearing in two games in 2022, and two in 2024. In Week 5 of the 2022 season, he set a record for the longest field goal ever made in franchise history at 59 yards. That was broken by Harrison Butker the very next week, as he hit a 62-yarder.

Wright made three of four field goal attempts and all eight extra point opportunities for the Chiefs that season. Fast forward to 2024, Wright was one of three kickers to play for K.C. that year. In Weeks 13 and 14, he connected on four field goals each. His final one was the game-winner over the Los Angeles Chargers that clinched the Chiefs’ ninth consecutive AFC West division title.

The kick went through despite first bouncing off the left upright, and was labeled the “Doink for the Division.” For his efforts, Wright was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Since then, he has had short stints with the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans. Wright has made 56-64 career field goal attempts and 42-44 extra points.
