Will the Kansas City Chiefs re-sign safety Tyrann Mathieu or will they get outbid by another team?

That's one of the biggest questions surrounding the Chiefs this offseason.

On Tuesday, Kansas City general manager Brett Veach addressed the topic of re-signing Mathieu.

“After the Cincinnati game, we had a chance to talk,” said Veach at the NFL combine. “We communicated that we certainly love Tyrann, and Tyrann loves being here.”

Veach also said that he's expressed to Mathieu that Kansas City wants him back in 2022 and beyond. He also noted that the Chiefs will meet with Mathieu's representation this week at the combine.

We've known for a while that Kansas City would prefer that Mathieu plays for the Chiefs next season. But it's obviously all about cost.

I think the biggest takeaway from Veach's comments is that Kansas City plans to spend a significant amount of time this week with Mathieu's representation. That indicates that the Chiefs are trying to get a deal done with Mathieu before the start of free agency later this month.

That's huge. Because if Mathieu is still unsigned when the start of free agency rolls around, then suddenly Kansas City is bidding against other suitors. And that could quickly drive the price up to a level the Chiefs aren't comfortable with.

Kansas City is clearly trying to get this done quickly. It's still going to come down to money. But my gut says the Chiefs will find a way to get this done before free agency opens.
