Chiefs LG Kingsley Suamataia sent his cousin, Lions RT Penei Sewell, a message ahead of ‘Sunday Night Football’
Kingsley Suamataia and the Chiefs are ready to play Penei Sewell and the Lions.
Sunday Night Football between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions is going to be fun, and especially fun for one big family. Lions OL Penei Sewell and Chiefs OL Kingsley Suamataia are cousins, and on Sunday, they’ll be playing one another for the first time.
“It was his birthday yesterday, so I texted him happy birthday, then I just said see you Sunday. I kept it short and simple from there,” Suamataia told reporters. “We talk on occasion when we can; he’s a busy guy. Yeah, I’ll see him Sunday.”
Suamataia has learned some things from his All-Pro cousin, Sewell
Sewell is one of the best offensive linemen in the entire league. He doesn’t really have a weakness and is a big reason the Lions’ offensive line got turned around the way it did in the first place. He’s a bit older than Kingsley, but has been able to be that perfect role model for his younger cousin.
“It’s been great, he’s dominant, good in the run game, and great in the pass game. At the end of the day, I still have to put it all in my hands, but he’s been great… I still have to look in the mirror and see what kind of player I want to be,” Suamataia continued.
Suamataia was drafted as a tackle last season, but after that didn’t work out too well, he was moved to guard this offseason, and he’s been pretty good there.
This is a game where the offensive lines of both teams can really determine what happens. For the Chiefs, they have to protect Mahomes, and they have been doing a good job of that in the last few games. However, with the guys they have, the youth, and the self-inflicted wounds we have seen, they would very well put up a stinker against the Lions’ defensive line.
Detroit Lions offensive ranks
- 6th in Yards Per Game at 365.0, 7th in Total Yards at 1,825.
- 12th in Passing Yards Per Game at 230.2, 12th in Total Passing Yards at 1,151.
- 7th in Rushing Yards Per Game at 134.8, 7th in Total Rushing Yards at 674.
- 1st in Points Per Game at 34.8, 1st in Total Points at 174.
For the Lions, they have to make sure the Chiefs’ defensive line doesn’t get going. Other than Chris Jones, who has admittedly had some bad moments the last few weeks, George Karlaftis has easily been the best defensive lineman on the team. They haven’t been able to get to the passer as well as they’d like, despite being okay in the run game. They need to put pressure on Jared Goff if they want him to make mistakes, which he doesn’t do a ton of.
After the game, whether they won or lost, we could see the two cousins swap jerseys.
“Oh yeah, most definitely, I’m going to have to get that one,” Suamataia said regarding a jersey swap with his cousin.
