The Las Vegas Raiders narrowly fell to the Kansas City Chiefs, 30-27. They could have won, and should have. Yet, they beat themselves more than Kansas City beat them. It was still very obvious that this is a different Raiders team than we have seen.

So much so that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had no choice but to talk about the Raiders after the game.

“My hat goes off to the Raiders and the job they’ve done there,” Reid said. “Listen, they’re a good football team, and we knew it coming in. We figured it’d take four quarters of good, hard football. It is the Raiders. It is an AFC rival, and there’s a ton of tradition there. They’re building it here, and with that competition, it increases it even more. So, my hat goes off to them.”

This hasn’t been a big “rivalry” for a while. The Chiefs have won 18 of the last 22 matchups against the Raiders. Every once in a while the Raiders will win a game, like Christmas Day a few years ago.

It’s safe to say this game showed that the rivalry is back. Now, of course, the Raiders still have to win some games in the series. They still have to keep getting better. But they will not just get rolled over like they used to.

“I think when it’s two good teams, that helps the whole thing,” he said about the rivalry. “That was a battle. They battled their tail off, and our guys battled their tail off, and that’s what this is all about. That’s why we do what we do, and I think it’s healthy. The guys respect each other, but they play their tails off against each other and fight, and that’s what this thing goes on”

Raiders made the right hire in Klint Kubiak, and Reid knows it, too

The Raiders waited the hiring process out this offseason. Klint Kubiak was coaching in the Super Bowl. So, they were the last to hire their coach. And it was worth it. They knew he was the guy for them. Coaches around the league know it, too.

“Yeah, listen, Klint’s [Kubiak] done a nice job. As I mentioned earlier, he’s holding the guys accountable for what he wants to get done. You can see that in their discipline of play. They haven’t had a lot of turnovers, haven’t had a lot of penalties on either side. They’re trying to do what he’s asking them to do; he’s demanding it, and it shows.”

The Raiders are headed in the right direction. And, to make things better, their schedule has them with at least eight winnable games remaining of their final 13. That doesn’t mean they will win them, but you can definitely make a case for this team winning nine games this year. And the roster still has a lot of holes that need to be addressed. Regardless, the future is bright because of Kubiak.
