The Las Vegas Raiders took a minor risk drafting rookie cornerback Jermod McCoy in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He fell from the first round to Day 3 because of a knee issue. Now, rookie head coach Klint Kubiak is giving an update on his training camp plan.
“The plan is to get [McCoy] reps early and see how he responds in his recovery,” Kubiak told reporters. “It’s a moving target with him. He’s a guy that worked extremely hard. And he has been dedicated to the program that we’ve put in front of him. But Jermod hasn’t played football in a year, and we’re aware of that. But he’s ready to practice [on Wednesday]. And we’re also going to be really smart with him and develop him the right way.”

McCoy had a knee issue that has been described as one that could keep him from ever signing a second NFL contract. Of course, that’s not definitive, just what someone out there anticipates. The Raiders felt confident in taking the risk because the reward could be so big. Now, it’s obvious the Raiders have a plan, and one insider thinks it’s going very, very smoothly.
Currently, McCoy is following a managed workload during offseason activities, which has limited his participation on the field. So far, he’s mainly done stretching and light exercises rather than full football drills.
Standing just under 6’1″ and weighing 190 pounds, McCoy boasts 31-inch arms and exceptional speed. At his Tennessee Pro Day, he made a strong impression by running an impressive 4.37-second 40-yard dash. He demonstrated his readiness to make an immediate impact.
When healthy, McCoy displays a combination of length, explosiveness, and fluid athleticism, along with notable ball skills and toughness at the point of attack. He fits well in both press and off coverage and continues to develop his technique. After sitting out the 2025 season, he remains youthful and somewhat unseasoned, making him a high-risk, high-reward pick. If he reaches his potential, McCoy could become a cornerstone of the Raiders’ defense in the future.
