Sean McVay needed one brutally honest quote after the Rams’ win on MNF to remind everyone what makes him different

The Los Angeles Rams have got their mojo back. A Week 2 win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football certainly helped. Aaron Donald’s return to the football field certainly provided a boost, too.

But it was head coach Sean McVay who felt the most like his old self after Monday night’s win. And in the process reminded us all why he’s among the league’s best head coaches.

Sean McVay falls on the sword after a rough Week 1

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn, and sometimes you have a dumbass coach that makes travel plans that puts you in a bad spot.”

— Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay

McVay, for the record, is the same ‘dumbass coach’ that he’s referring to. And with a coach like Sean being willing to fall directly on the sword for his players? It tells you a lot about McVay. And it tells you a lot about why he’s had the sustained successes he has. The play design and play sequencing help McVay’s resume a ton. Of course. Nobody is disputing that. But a coach who is willing to get up in front of the media after a win and throw himself under the bus? Especially in such a self-deprecating manner? That deserves a lot of credit.

That, my friends, is how you lead a football team.

So long as McVay is in play, the Rams are going to be a problem — whether Matthew Stafford and company are in town or not. The win over the Giants was nice. And Donald’s return was welcomed, especially as Myles Garrett heals on injured reserve. But the real engine behind this bounce-back? A head coach who knows that leadership starts with ownership at the top.
