The Miami Dolphins may be catching a last-minute break ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the New York Jets. Miami spent the week practicing and preparing as though it would see Jets running back Breece Hall, one of the more explosive ball carriers in the NFL. Now the Dolphins’ defense may be preparing for a different kind of challenge on Sunday.

A report Sunday morning from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport indicates that Hall is unlikely to play against the Dolphins. For a Miami team still searching for its first win, that’s welcome news on the eve of a divisional game.

New York Jets running back Breece Hall is reportedly unlikely to play against the Miami Dolphins

Hall is the kind of back who can flip a game with one touch. His value to the Jets isn’t the steady four-yard gain. It’s the explosive run that can generate points in a hurry. Few backs in the league create those plays as well as Hall can when healthy.

Take that element away and New York’s ability to manufacture big plays on the ground gets a lot softer. The Jets haven’t run the ball efficiently to begin with thus far this season. They’re averaging less than four yards per carry offensively. On the other side of the ball? The Dolphins are allowing less than four yards per carry defensively (3.7 yards per rush).

I’m not a math guy, but those numbers line up nicely for Miami. This matchup looks favorable for Miami as it searches for a breakthrough win under coach Jeff Hafley. A winless start in South Florida has worn on the fan base already. Miami’s defensive front can lead the charge and help create a breakthrough in this matchup.

Braelon Allen gets the call for the Jets

With Hall unlikely to suit up, the workload will fall on running back Braelon Allen. Allen is a powerful runner, and he isn’t someone the Dolphins can take lightly. He runs through contact and will test the physicality of Miami’s front seven on every carry.

That being said, he’s not Breece Hall. Allen brings a different style than Hall. A power back typically wins by grinding out yards between the tackles. The Dolphins’ week of preparation focused on both matching Allen’s power and containing Hall’s speed and explosiveness. The latter is, reportedly, going to be off the table. Let’s see if it can tilt the scales in Miami’s favor out of the bye.
