Jon-Eric Sullivan and the Miami Dolphins reportedly kicked the tires on a blockbuster deal that would have turned heads

The Miami Dolphins did reportedly kick around on one of the NFL’s recent big trades.

The Miami Dolphins aren’t necessarily an obvious buy or sell at the 2026 NFL trade deadline. We have seen teams in the start of a build acquire talent via trade before — but the Dolphins lack a surplus of future draft picks that would allow them to act aggressively.

They have several players who could help teams with big aspirations this season, too — but Miami reportedly covets their veteran leadership in-house at this stage. So we’ll see what happens over the next 72 hours or so. But one thing is certain: you miss every opportunity you don’t act on. With that in mind, it’s encouraging to hear a new report that the Dolphins worked on one player who got traded this season: Marvin Harrison Jr.

The Miami Dolphins reportedly did ‘due diligence’ about WR Marvin Harrison Jr. last month

“Though the Dolphins did due diligence on Marvin Harrison Jr. last month, Miami is all about stockpiling picks.”

— Jonathan Jones, The Athletic

There’s not really any surprise with the back half of that statement from ‘The Athletic’ insider Jonathan Jones. Miami wants to build through the draft, which means having as much draft capital as possible to work the event every spring. But knowing that the desire to build through the draft didn’t shut the Dolphins out of inquiring with the Arizona Cardinals regarding Harrison Jr. is a sign of good business.

The former top-10 draft choice was ultimately traded to the Houston Texans for a 2nd-round pick plus — a handsome price. Certainly not one that Miami should have been interested in paying. But the Dolphins wouldn’t have known the cost of doing business if they were just adamant that they want picks and didn’t bother. So despite their mentality of adding picks, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan still did his due diligence on the Cardinals receiver. As he should. Let’s hope he does the same for every other potential building block that may be on the move. You know…just in case.
