Miami Dolphins tab a former top-10 overall draft choice to boost their competition on the edge
The Miami Dolphins have tacked on an extra contender to their EDGE rusher competition.
Jeff Hafley’s Miami Dolphins defense is going to have plenty of players in “prove it” opportunities. As new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has worded it, Miami has plenty of folks who are “chasing the carrot”.
You can add a new name to the list on the eve of report date for 2026 training camp, too. The Miami Dolphins announced a new signing to their edge defender room. This one? It’s going to create a little extra urgency for some of the other names jostling for playing time. Miami has signed former top-10 overall draft choice Clelin Ferrell.

Clelin Ferrell’s career hasn’t played out quite like anyone hoped when the Las Vegas Raiders made him the 4th overall draft choice in the 2019 NFL Draft. But Ferrell has, typically been a viable part of an NFL rotation on the edge. He’ll be expected to serve the same kind of role in 2026 for the Miami Dolphins.
Ferrell, who has posted 21.0 career sacks, joins a pass rush room that features Chop Robinson, Joshua Uche, and David Ojabo as some of the top veterans on the roster. Robinson and Uche have both referenced playing a little heavier in Miami this season. Ferrell’s addition seems to signal a continued intent for that kind of presence on the edge.
Ferrell’s best quality is his heavy handedness, which can show up on the edge and allow him to reset the line of scrimmage. He’s not quite a bursty, twitchy rush threat like Robinson or Uche are at their best. But he’s a legitimate 300-400 snap candidate who raises the floor of what we should expect from the Dolphins’ edge group this season. That’s hard to be upset about for a late July signing.
