One position that has haunted the Miami Dolphins for years is finally showing signs of change for the better
Ask any Dolphins fan and they’ll gladly tell you one position group has haunted this team for years. We’re seeing some promising progress on that front in 2026.
Ask any Miami Dolphins fan you know one simple question and I’d bet most give you a similar answer. What’s one position group that has generally haunted this team for years?
‘Offensive line’ is an acceptable answer, but the most specific answer is guard. The Dolphins’ interior offensive line play has been a major point of frustration for years, with only Robert Hunt seemingly serving as a consistent performer in recent memory. I could go down the list if you’d like — but I’d bet you’ll be just fine if I don’t give the full rundown. But Miami’s 2026 guard combination? There’s some growth taking place. Perhaps a glimmer of hope for a better future?
The Miami Dolphins are seeing some promising progress at offensive guard early this season
“I mentioned the first game, it was fun to watch Proctor. He had five or six knockdowns. Sometimes he wasn’t knocking down the right guy. This week he cleaned that up. We were on our assignments far more all the way across the board up front and I thought he played with the same intent, the same physicality. I know there’s still some stuff across the board up front we’re working through pass pro wise that we’re constantly just going to have to keep getting better at. But I think he’s on his way.
I’d say the same with Jonah. I think Jonah’s taking a step in the run game and definitely showing up as a plus in that area. Really, same demeanor, same attitude, same displacement. And then in pass pro, like I think we all in this room know, like last year wasn’t the year Jonah wanted to have. So to see him come out and how much more stout he is in there…I think they’re growing and that’s all we ask for right now. Like, let’s keep growing.”

The 49ers film affirms Slowik’s assessment
Keep growing, indeed. That’s the primary objective for everyone in South Florida right now as this build gets underway. But if the Dolphins’ words about being physical up front and playing with a toughness are to be manifested, guys like Proctor and Savaiinaea are near the top of the list of priorities. And I happen to agree with Slowik. Go back and re-watch the 49ers game. Don’t watch the ball, watch the interior combination blocks. Miami got a ton of movement on the inside.
Proctor, Brewer, and Savaiinaea were at the center of the effort. Now the team needs to parlay that into steady progress and, at the same time, eliminate the procedural issues. If they do that week over week, we’ll easily find ourselves feeling as good about the guard spot as we have in years by the time 2027 rolls around.
At that point, the big question will be whether Proctor stays at guard or assumes a tackle spot into the future. But that’s a question for another day. Just keep swinging.
