This Miami Dolphins build is going to be a long road. Miami is starting this season with some tough circumstances for the first season of the Jeff Hafley era.
That requires a certain kind of mindset. One that isn’t going to wallow if the results don’t show up right away. Accordingly, that makes the kinds of people that general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan is picking to add to the team especially more important. That’s what building a roster and team is all about, after all. In a new interview on ‘Drive Time with Travis Wingfield’, first-round rookie cornerback Chris Johnson proved why he was ‘the guy’ for this regime in just one sentence.

“I definitely enjoy the process, especially over the results…a thing about me, I kind of love just being over-prepared. Football, it’s kind of more than a game when you really dive into it…it’s a lot more than just playing. It’s a lot of things that are tendencies. ‘Some guys do this, some guys do that.’
You kind of got to know guys’ real personalities. What kind of guy is he? Being able to study that and come up with the answers. And then it’s almost like you got a cheat sheet on game day and being able to see like nine to 10 of my answers are correct. I’m gonna be able to make some good plays like that.”

This is the kind of mindset that a coach is going to love. Because an undying to the process of mastering your craft will help you avoid the trap that comes when success starts to show up. That was, presumably, a part of the issue that befell that last iteration of the Dolphins. The wins started showing up, money started getting handed out, and the team subsequently fell off.
A player that’s consumed by his ability to master his craft and loves Monday through Saturday stands a better chance of avoiding that trap. And with a long season ahead for the Dolphins and an even longer road to a rebuild left to be paved? Having a whole bunch of guys with Chris Johnson’s mindset will go a long way.
