The Miami Dolphins’ last-minute roster move could help solve two problems at once
The Miami Dolphins are officially a ‘go’ with another member of their 2026 rookie draft class.
The Miami Dolphins‘ rookie class is, unquestionably, the busiest in football. Depending on the week, the Dolphins have rookies starting at left guard, cornerback, MIKE linebacker, wide receiver (twice over), Y-tight end, free safety, and fullback.
Another receiver and another defensive end are also logging meaningful time in the rotation. But it’s time to add another name to the pile. The Miami Dolphins, after four weeks with rookie safety Kyle Louis, are welcoming him back into the fray. He’s been activated to the 53-man roster.
Miami Dolphins rookie Kyle Louis is officially back, activated off injured reserve in time for Week 7
Louis’ return may not impact the Dolphins’ game plan for Week 7. The Dolphins couldn’t possibly have expected Louis to be ready for the week and set a specific set of packages around his skill set. But beyond this week against the Jets, the Dolphins just got back their best chance to help solve one of their most apparent woes in pass defense. Louis can be the ticket to amplifying their coverage in the middle fo the field.
When the Dolphins are in nickel defense, three cornerbacks populate the field. That helps with coverage but compromises size. Louis? He’s over 220 pounds. And he’s a collegiate linebacker.
Veteran Willie Gay Jr. currently mans the SAM linebacker spot. And while I wouldn’t suspect Louis seizes that role, I do expect his skill set to absorb the snaps Gay Jr. has been taking in obvious passing situations. That positions him to be a hybrid hash defender who can thump, tackle, and play turn & run coverage against bigger bodies. With all of the successful completions Miami is conceding underneath, a fresh option in coverage could be just what the doctor ordered.
This is before you factor in the potential special teams impact, too. The Dolphins’ special teams struggles are…well documented. Louis will presumably have a chance to seize snaps there, too. The Dolphins could certainly use it. Louis played more than 50% of the team’s special teams reps in Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
We’ll have to see what Week 7 brings given that Louis only started practicing this week. But long term? It’s game on for yet another rookie.
