Kyler Murray is working hard to debunk the narratives and it’s a great sign for the Minnesota Vikings
When you look at the Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition, many have criticized Kyler Murray for some unfair things.
Training camp hasn’t even started yet, and the Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition already has people on social media on fire. You’ll see some aggressive things said about both J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray. Some of them are rooted in truths like poor play or being cut by the Arizona Cardinals, but many come from emotional attachment or detachment to either player.
Once you boil things down to the nitty-gritty, you can make genuine arguments for both McCarthy and Murray. One of the biggest issues for Murray going into the competition is that McCarthy has a leg up on working with the receivers and in the offense as a whole.

Murray understands that he has somewhat of a disadvantage competing with an incumbent quarterback, and he’s working to tighten that gap. He was working out over the summer in the Dallas metroplex at his high school in Allen, Texas, with wide receiver Jordan Addison.
It’s good to see Murray doing things like this to prepare for the season. It also dispels the narrative that he’s lazy.
We all remember the Arizona Cardinals putting in the “Call of Duty” clause in his contract extension. That mandated four hours of independent film study each week. That in itself was controversial, and it was subsequently removed from the contract quickly. The narrative never officially left Murray, and it’s still prevalent.
Obviously, these clips are very selective, as both throws are really nice deep balls to Addison. Both players need to have a great year, with the potential of receiving mega contract extensions during the season or right after. Murray especially needs a great year due to being on a one-year deal, and the Cardinals are only going to be paying part of his salary for this season.
We will see soon enough how much these sessions have made a difference, but it’s certainly a good sign.
