The Minnesota Vikings received some unfortunate news on Tuesday when wide receiver Jeshaun Jones was suspended three games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Jeshaun Jones suspended three games

The 2024 undrafted free agent out of Maryland was the highest-priced UDFA the Vikings signed that year. He has spent the last two seasons on the practice squad, earning a couple of call-ups over that stretch. This year, Jones had showcased a little bit extra compared to previous years, but it didn’t seem to be enough to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

Both Tai Felton and Myles Price had shown a lot of improvement over the same time frame, making the competition that much tougher. Jones also had a fumble against the Baltimore Ravens that likely sealed his fate when it came to making the roster. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for him, and the suspension only compounds what was already a difficult situation.

What the suspension means for Vikings roster math

Where does this leave Minnesota? Simply put, it’s going to make roster math a little bit easier. With Jones not eligible to be on the initial 53-man roster, the Vikings have more flexibility heading into cutdown day. If they want to have him on the active roster when he returns from suspension, they can do that, but this creates a much easier situation with roster math.

That could mean someone like Dillon Bell, Dontae Fleming, Jacob Roberts, or Jacob Thomas ends up making the team instead. Those are all objectively good things for the Vikings’ depth at the position.

The likely scenario is that Jones will be released and possibly placed on the practice squad, but this isn’t a great development for him or the organization. The Vikings will likely place him on the suspended list instead of releasing him, because it gives them the opportunity to keep him if they want to. However, it’s not a good situation for either side, and this could be the end of Jones’ time in Minnesota.
