Donovan Jackson suffering a knee injury is a brutal blow to the Vikings’ offense, which is a unit that is already struggling.

Injuries have already started to impact the Minnesota Vikings. Running back Jordan Mason is on injured reserve with a broken thumb, tight end Josh Oliver tore his bicep against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and safety Jamal Adams is out for the year after tearing his quadriceps tendon.

Injuries are a part of the game, and it’s not a surprise that the Vikings are dealing with their fair share. Heck, wide receiver Justin Jefferson has missed most of the last two games with an ankle injury.

Donovan Jackson to miss the rest of the season

Sunday afternoon saw Vikings left guard Donovan Jackson suffer a knee injury. Initially, it didn’t look too bad when he signaled to come off the field, but that didn’t end up being the case. Jackson suffered a torn meniscus and will likely miss the rest of the season

This is a really difficult one for the Vikings to handle. Jackson, who was a first-round pick last year out of Ohio State, had been playing really well. With the Vikings’ renewed focus on the running game, the left side of the line has been the main focus with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s play calling. Both Jackson and Christian Darrisaw were moving bodies in the run game, and he was developing nicely as a pass protector.

Losing Jackson is tough for multiple reasons. First off, it puts the Vikings in a bind on the offensive line. Both Michael Jurgens and Nick Samac are on injured reserve with injuries. Forcing one of you backups to be a starter out of necessity is a tough pill to swallow. Joe Huber, a 2025 UDFA out of Wisconsin, started one game as a rookie against the Cleveland Browns, and looked okay. He will be the likely starter against the New Orleans Saints, as he came in for Jackson.

The second aspect is for Jackson. He was developing really nicely and having to spend the next 9-12 months rehabbing instead of trying to improve is brutal. It’s not something that can’t be overcome long-term, but it’s certainly far from being ideal.

It also raises the idea of the Vikings potentially trading for a guard for the stretch run. General manager Nolan Teasley has already mentioned the idea of making a trade with the pick they got from the J.J. McCarthy trade. Maybe they will use it to go get an improvement at guard.
