Reaction
Saturday 8/24: The first grouping of eight cut players does not feature many surprises, and none of the above names will likely make the Giants’ practice squad.
The most unexpected cut thus far is WR Montell Washington, who had a hot start to training camp. He was one of the top performers among the backups and had a productive first game against the Buffalo Bills. He also showed flashes of being a quality special-teams player.
Since then, Washington has lacked consistency, and younger players like Beaux Collins have emerged. With the top four receiver spots established, there wasn’t enough room for Washington to make the team as the sixth WR.
Sunday 8/25: The Giants moved UDFA CB TJ Moore to the IR after his gruesome injury in the final preseason game. Moore was a unanimous All-America selection from Mercer and made a name for himself with a 44-yard pick-six return in the Giants’ third preseason game. Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Moore suffered a fractured femur at the end of Thursday’s win.
Tuesday 8/26: Per Adam Schefter, the Giants are releasing quarterback Tommy DeVito. This doesn’t come as a grand surprise because the Giants would have needed to trade Jameis Winston or keep four quarterbacks if DeVito were to stay. But this move comes on a depressing note, with what DeVito meant to the local community being a Don Bosco kid. One would assume DeVito will get signed by a team with a below-average backup quarterback.
Tuesday 8/26: Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the Giants cut running back Dante Miller. Miller was a preseason standout as a special teams player and a receiver out of the backfield. This move was a surprise, given all the praise Miller received from the coaching staff.
Tuesday 8/26: Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Elijah Chatman is being cut. This is another shocking move considering the reps he received on the defensive line and as the Giants’ fullback.
We will continue to provide updates throughout the weekend when more moves are made.
