New York Giants hosted a free agent for a visit, who could help soften the blow if they trade Dexter Lawrence
The New York Giants met with an intriguing free agent who could either be a solid parter for Dexter Lawrence or help the team soften the blow if they are forced to trade away their star defensive tackle.
The New York Giants have been working through a diffcult hurdle over the last couple of weeks. Star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence’s trade request complicates the team’s plans. We will have to wait and see how the team resolves that situation. However it seems the Giants are atleast looking at other optons at defensive tackle just in case.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants hosted former Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Texans defensive tackle D.J. Reader

Giants hosting defensive tackle D.J. Reader for a free agent visit
Reader was selected in the fifth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Texans. He spent his first four years in the league in Houston before signing with the Bengals in 2020. He then spent four years in Cincinnati before signing with the Lions in 2024 and spent the last two years in Detroit.
Reader’s appeared in 137 games in his career and started 128. He has recorded 12.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, and 328 total tackles in his career. He’s now looking for the next step in his carer and it seems New York is a spot he has his eyes on.
At one point, teams viewed Reader as one of the premier run stoppers in the NFL.He will be 32 years old before training camp kicks off and can still be a solid addition to the inteiror of a defensive line.
He wouldn’t replace much of Lawrence’s ability as a pass rusher. So if a trade comes together for the All-Pro the Giants would have to fill that void elsewhere. If they sign Reader they will raise the floor of their run defense. Which may help soften the blow if they are forced to trade Lawrence.
Keeping Lawrence and signing Reader should also be an opition in my opinion. Pairing a run stopper like Reader with a proven pass rusher like Lawrence would make for a great defensive tackle duo. Also they’d still have Darius Alexander to rotate in to cause havoc as well. This move makes a lot of sense for New York, now we will have to wait and see if the two sides can agree on a deal.
