The updates continue to fly around the New York Giants and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. He’s been looking for a new extension with the team, but the Giants may have just run out of time to get a deal done with him.

Dexter Lawrence reportedly wants out of New York

According to Paul Schwartz, Dexter Lawrence no longer wants a new contract with the Giants. He would rather be traded as of now, and talks between the player and team are considered past the point of continuing.

“His desire for a new contract from the only NFL team he has ever played for resulted in talks but nothing substantial from a financial standpoint. And now, he wants to turn the page and move on.” — NY Post

This report shortly follows the update that New York did not want to entertain any trade offer that did not include at least a first-round pick. They had their asking price and have planned to stick to it. Now, Lawrence may force their hand.

Giants have difficult decision to make for future of defense

Lawrence has been a key cog in the Giants defense since New York drafted him. When he has been on the field for the Giants over the last three years, these are the defense’s ranks among the rest of the NFL:

  • 8th in pass success (42%)
  • 8th in sack rate (7.4%)
  • 13th in YPA (7.0)
  • 15th in pressure rate (36%)

Those ranks drop into the bottom three in the NFL without Lawrence on the field. The impact is crystal clear, and now, New York is at risk of losing him for a price they may not prefer given his frustrations and push to exit the franchise.
