Both the Eagles and Rams are desperate for a win, but one team has way more at stake heading into this showdown

Philadelphia has had Sean McVay’s number for years, but the Rams may be the more desperate team heading into Week 4.

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4 in what should be a more balanced game than it appears on the surface.

The Eagles have owned the series against the Rams under head coach Sean McVay, racking up most of the victories and making life difficult for Los Angeles. Playing in Philadelphia only compounds the challenge. The Rams need this game far more than the Eagles do, and that desperation could be the deciding factor.

The Eagles have room to breathe at 2-2

If the Eagles drop this game and fall to 2-2, it is not the end of the world.

The NFC East is not exactly a gauntlet right now. The Washington Commanders have been an up-and-down team. The Dallas Cowboys defense still has issues. The New York Giants are without their franchise quarterback. All of those factors work in Philadelphia’s favor, and a 2-2 start still leaves a clear path to winning the division.

The Rams, on the other hand, cannot afford to fall to 1-3. Seattle is still a good team. San Francisco is playing above its head right now. A 1-3 hole in that division would be brutal, and that reality should make the Rams the more desperate team on Sunday.

Desperation and narrative brain

That desperation is precisely why picking the Rams to win makes sense. If they lose, they then travel to face the Buffalo Bills the following week, and the 2026 Rams are not starting 1-4. It is just not happening. The urgency factor tilts toward Los Angeles in a significant way.

There is also the comedic angle to consider.

If the Eagles lose, they will have dropped back-to-back games to two 38-year-old quarterbacks. What are the odds of that happening? In all seriousness, the odds are probably higher than most people think. It is like hitting the difficult leg of a parlay and then just needing the heavy favorite to cash. The hard part is already done.

A historically old quarterback parlay

The real question becomes: what is the highest combined quarterback age for back-to-back losses in NFL history? A combined 76 years from two opposing signal-callers would be pretty remarkable.

Then again, Tom Brady and Drew Brees played in the same division when Brady was a Buccaneer. Brady was 43 and 44 years old during that stretch, and Brees was in his 40s as well. It is entirely possible that the Carolina Panthers or Atlanta Falcons already broke that record by losing to both in consecutive weeks.

That is a research project for another day, but it is the kind of absurd stat that makes the NFL so entertaining.

What it all means

The Eagles have the home-field advantage and the historical edge in this series against McVay. Those are real factors. The Rams have to figure out Philadelphia at some point, and this feels like the week where the circumstances demand it.

A loss here puts Los Angeles in a dire spot that a talented roster should not find itself in this early. Philadelphia can survive a defeat. The Rams probably cannot. That gap in desperation is enough to give Los Angeles the edge, even on the road.
