Steelers’ Cam Heyward comes to the defense of one of his former coaches amid ongoing lawsuit against the National Football League
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ veteran defensive tackle has never been shy about sharing his opinion, and he used his off day to weigh in on one of the biggest controversies hanging over the NFL right now.
Whether it’s on social media, on a podcast, or in the locker room, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward is never afraid to share his opinion. He did it again this week, weighing in on the Brian Flores lawsuit against the NFL, one of the league’s biggest controversies.
Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores was previously a defensive assistant with the Steelers. He is suing the NFL on multiple grounds, and the core of his argument is that he has been blackballed out of a head coaching job in the league.
What the recruiting report revealed
The latest development in the case centers on a document that has now become public. ESPN posted on social media about what Flores’ legal team says is inside it:
“A recruiting firm’s report on Brian Flores contains multiple examples of what his lawyers say are racial stereotypes that NFL teams use when evaluating Black coaching candidates.”
The immediate question is what exactly that report said.
That came out too. Dennis Young posted the memo, which lists the strengths and weaknesses the firm compiled on Flores for multiple organizations. I’m not going to walk through every line, but some of those evaluations are damning, to say the least.
The fact that this material surfaced publicly at all is wild. A report built to help teams make coaching decisions is now evidence in a lawsuit against the league itself.
Cam Heyward weighs in on Flores
The crux of this story is Heyward’s response. The Steelers’ longtime defensive leader replied to a different outlet’s post about Flores on social media and didn’t mince words:
“I can only speak on how Flo was here, but man, I love playing for Flo,” said Heyward. “[He] Worked his tail off and he held players accountable. [A] Brilliant mind who studied constantly.”
That is a ringing endorsement from a player who, in all honesty, should be a future Hall of Famer. Heyward has seen plenty of coaches come and go during his career in Pittsburgh, so his opinion on what makes a good one carries real weight.
What stood out to me most was the effort involved. Heyward went out of his way on his off day to reply to a fairly random post about Flores. He didn’t have to say anything. Nobody was asking him to, and the topic is far from comfortable for an active player to touch.
Why Heyward’s words matter
I think that response says a lot about Heyward’s character. He has long been one of the most respected voices in the Steelers’ locker room, and he has rarely shied away from tough conversations.
It speaks to Flores’ character as well. Players don’t typically go to bat publicly for a former assistant unless that coach made a real impact on them. Hayward specifically pointed to Flores’ work ethic, his willingness to hold players accountable, and his preparation. Those are exactly the traits teams claim to want when hiring a head coach.
That is part of what makes this situation so frustrating to watch. A future Hall of Fame player is vouching for a coach’s intelligence and work ethic, while a report that teams used to evaluate that same coach is now at the center of allegations about racial stereotyping.
What happens next in the lawsuit, nobody knows. Flores is still coaching in Minnesota, and Heyward is still anchoring the defensive front in Pittsburgh. For now, it’s clear where the Steelers’ veteran stands. We will keep you updated as the case develops.
