49ers' first injury report for Week 4 game with Patriots features mixed news for Brock Purdy

As expected, the back soreness Brock Purdy felt in the wake of the San Francisco 49ers' shock defeat to the Los Angeles Rams won't impact on his preparations for what they hope will be a bounce-back game against the New England Patriots.

Purdy had an MRI on his back earlier in the week, but it did not reveal any issues.

And head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Purdy would be full go in Wednesday's practice when he spoke to the media.

There was a boost for Purdy as Shanahan revealed All-Pro tight end George Kittle would return to practice in a limited capacity. Kittle missed the Rams game with a hamstring injury.

However, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams was ruled out of Wednesday's practice through illness, while wide receiver Deebo Samuel remains sidelined with a calf injury.

On the defensive side of the ball, there was more bad news for linebacker Dee Winters, who re-aggravated an ankle injury in his season debut against the Rams. The 49ers are looking to use Winters as a part of their starting defense but, with his injury bad enough to keep him out of Wednesday's practice, it's uncertain whether he'll be able to play any role against New England.

49ers' preliminary injury report

DNP: Dee Winters (ankle), Trent Williams (illness), Deebo Samuel (calf), Javon Hargrave (tricep)

Limited: George Kittle (hamstring)

Full: Brock Purdy (back)

If Winters cannot play in Week 4, it will be interesting to see if the 49ers mix in another linebacker to take snaps away from veteran De'Vondre Campbell, who markedly struggled at the WILL linebacker spot during San Francisco's collapse against the Rams.

Javon Hargrave was also listed on the injury report with a did not practice designation after suffering a season-ending tricep injury in Week 3. Hargrave will likely be placed on injured reserve in the coming days.
