Brock Purdy is playing at an MVP level, and through two weeks, it hasn’t even been close. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback torched the Miami Dolphins in a 35-13 beatdown. Purdy completed 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards, with two passing touchdowns, and a rushing score. His passer rating sat at 149.7. 

That is about as close to perfect as it gets. And do not be fooled just because it came against the Dolphins. Purdy dominated against the Rams as well. He is on fire to start the year. 

Purdy is doing it without his weapons

What makes Purdy’s start to the season so impressive isn’t just the box score. It’s the context around it. He’s lost Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk (coming back soon), and De’Zhaun Stribling. He even lost DeMarcus Robinson today to an injury as well. The weapons keep disappearing, and Purdy keeps producing at an elite level.

Look, losing that many pass catchers would sink most quarterbacks in this league. Purdy hasn’t flinched. He led the 49ers in rushing with three carries for 30 yards and added the rushing touchdown on top of everything he did through the air. Heck, Purdy had only 2 incompletions on the day. 

That’s not just good quarterback play. That’s dominance at the highest level. 

Two weeks, two different opponents, same result

The 49ers opened the season against the Rams and followed it up with the Dolphins. Those are two completely different teams when you look at talent level and defensive style, and it hasn’t mattered one bit. San Francisco has dominated both, and Purdy has been the driving force behind it.

Other than the interception against Los Angeles in Week 1, Purdy has been nearly flawless. Two games into the season, he’s making a legitimate case for MVP consideration, and the numbers back it up. A near-perfect passer rating, a completion percentage north of 90%, and total command of this offense regardless of who’s lined up around him.

I sure hope we’re getting the highest level of him in his career so far. We all know this team certainly needs it based on the injury total at this point in the season. 

What’s next for San Francisco

The 49ers get to host the Arizona Cardinals next week for their second NFC West battle of the season, and many will favor San Francisco in that one. It’s a great start to the month of September for the 49ers, and most importantly for their quarterback, who is proving that the talent around him doesn’t define his ceiling.

Purdy is playing at an MVP caliber right now. If he keeps this up, the conversation around him is going to shift from “system quarterback” to frontrunner in a hurry. Don’t be surprised when it happens.
