NFL punishes 49ers veteran just a few days after he suffers a season-ending injury in dominant Week 1 win over the Rams
Veteran tight end Jake Tonges saw his season end before the first game even ended and now he’s out nearly $10k because the NFL fined him for the leg whip that led to his MCL injury.
San Francisco 49ers tight end Jake Tonges suffered a season-ending MCL injury against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 and now he has to pay the NFL a little more than $9k after the league fined him for the leg whip that led to said injury.
Per the NFL’s Gameday Accountability site, Tonges was fined $9,266. It’s rough news, especially considering it comes less than a week after the season-ending injury.
Tonges wasn’t the only member of the 49ers to get fined, however. Veteran fullback and 10-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro Kyle Juszczyk was docked $20,033 for unnecessary roughness/illegal use of the helmet after he used the crown of his helmet to help block Rams defensive end Myles Garrett early in the third quarter of the 27-7 win.
The 49ers are one of four teams to have multiple players receive fines for Week 1 infractions. The Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, and Los Angeles Rams are the other squads, with the Cowboys leading the way with three players.
Juszczyk’s fine is also one of the most expensive from Week 1. It ranks second, only behind Detroit Lions superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ $23,027 penalty for his own unnecessary roughness/illegal use of the helmet infraction that occurred in the third quarter of the Lions’ 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints.
