There’s only one right answer for the San Francisco 49ers amid the never-ending Mac Jones trade rumors
The Mac Jones trade rumors simply refuse to go away — and there’s only one right answer for the San Francisco 49ers.
Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in! The San Francisco 49ers had some trade buzz around backup quarterback Mac Jones for the entirety of this offseason after a strong showing in 2025.
And then the season started. The quarterbacks were in place across the league (as best as possible). And so it seemed that, mercifully, the Jones trade speculation would die off. No such luck. Because a season-ending injury for New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has opened the door again for more Mac Jones rumors. He’s reportedly on the list of quarterback under consideration by the Giants. And it sounds like New York would like to strike a deal sooner rather than later. There’s only one thing to do for San Francisco.
The San Francisco 49ers ought to try to milk the Giants for all they’re worth
If I’m San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch (…I’m not), I’m calling Joe Schoen and telling him how good his roster is. How shaky the NFC East looks as Dallas struggles to get rolling defensively and while Washington endures quarterback injuries of their own. How the Giants could certainly make some noise this year under John Harbaugh. And how Mac Jones could be the key to it all.
A quality backup quarterback is the ultimate luxury in the NFL. And the 49ers have found one in Jones. But Jones is, undoubtedly, their backup. And Brock Purdy is under contract long-term. With Jones in a contract year, it’s worth questioning how much the 49ers will get for his services. Sure, they could keep him as an insurance policy in 2026, then let him walk in free agency and possibly get a 2028 compensatory pick.
Or, alternatively, the 49ers can try to take the Giants for all they’re worth here and now. It’s a risk — the roster is banged up already, which could ultimately test the outlook of this season by itself. Cashing out on Mac Jones leaves the 49ers vulnerable behind Purdy. But if they can coax a top-100 draft choice out of the Giants, I don’t know how you can say no. Mac will almost certainly sign for a chance to be a starter this offseason. The 49ers won’t be keeping him. The window to trade him is until the deadline…which is at the end of next month. It’s now or never if it’s going to happen — so the 49ers should see if they can land a price tag worth the risk.
