Elijah Arroyo injury update: Seattle Seahawks receive devastating news as young tight end faces another major setback in promising NFL career
Seahawks tight end Elijah Arroyo will miss the rest of the 2026 season, dealing another significant blow to his development after previous injury setbacks.
How much more can Elijah Arroyo’s young career take? The Seattle Seahawks tight end is undergoing shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the 2026 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Arroyo got hurt in last Thursday night’s primetime loss to the Denver Broncos as he was trying to recover a fumble by wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. It’s a brutal way to lose a season, and it’s even tougher for a second-year player who still has a lot to prove.
The numbers tell the story. Arroyo will miss 11 games for Seattle, plus any potential postseason run. Seahawks fans won’t see him on the field again until 2027.
Arroyo’s development takes a hit
Look, this injury hurts because Elijah Arroyo was just starting to carve out a role. The Seahawks took him in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft with the 50th overall pick. That’s real draft capital for a tight end.
As a rookie, he played in 13 games and caught 15 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers, but they’re a reasonable foundation for a first-year tight end learning the NFL game.
The 2026 season hasn’t gone the way anyone hoped, though. Through six games, Arroyo had just one catch for 17 yards, obviously much less production than his rookie year. Now he won’t get the chance to turn that around.
This shoulder injury is going to set him back a good bit. A second-year jump matters for young tight ends, and Arroyo loses most of that year. Losing those reps hurts.
Injury history follows Arroyo from Miami to Seattle
Now, Arroyo’s injury history isn’t new. It just hasn’t involved his shoulder until now. Most of his problems have been with his knee.
He tore his ACL in September of 2022 at Miami. That injury limited him to only nine games across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He bounced back and put together a great college career with the Hurricanes, which is a big reason Seattle used a second-round pick on him.
The knee issues followed him to the NFL, though. In December 2025, Arroyo suffered a Grade One knee strain. It resulted in the Seahawks placing him on injured reserve, and him missing the rest of the season.
This shoulder injury is a different animal for Elijah Arroyo. It’s the longest absence of his pro career by a wide margin. For a player who has already lost chunks of time in college and the NFL, it’s another frustrating hurdle.
What it means for the Seahawks’ tight end room
I’m not going to pretend this changes everything for Seattle. It’s obvious Arroyo came in to be the No. 2 tight end, even as a fairly high draft pick. The Seahawks are set at the position with AJ Barner leading the way. Seattle’s passing game will keep running through its top options, and the tight end room isn’t suddenly in crisis mode.
With that being said, don’t get me wrong, Arroyo is a weapon. He brings athleticism to the position, and a healthy version of him gives Seattle another matchup problem to throw at defenses. Losing that depth isn’t nothing, especially for a team hoping to make a postseason push. A team that also needs their pass-catching department to step up.
The bigger concern is Arroyo himself. Second-round tight ends usually need time to develop, and Arroyo just keeps losing it. He went from a knee strain late in his rookie year to a slow start in Year 2, and now his season is over.
I still think Arroyo has the tools to be a quality NFL tight end. His college tape at Miami showed it, and Seattle clearly believed in him. But the clock matters in this league, and 2027 is starting to look like a make-or-break year for him.
It’s unfortunate that we’ll have to wait that long to see him again. When he does come back, I expect Elijah Arroyo to recover from this injury and have a real chance to show the Seahawks why they took him at No. 50.
