Mike Macdonald provides major update on Sam Darnold’s injury following Seattle Seahawks win
The Seattle Seahawks won the game against the New England Patriots but now all eyes turn to Sam Darnold’s injury status.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is happy with his team’s first win of the season: a hard-fought 13-10 win against the New England Patriots that took three interceptions to secure while backup quarterback Drew Lock held down the fort on offense.
And fortunately, Macdonald got to pair his 1-0 celebration with a very positive update on quarterback Sam Darnold, who was ruled out with a hip injury after playing only five snaps.
Though the Seahawks still need to learn more about the quarterback’s injury, Macdonald took it upon himself to provide a very encouraging update on Darnold.
Sam Darnold avoids a fracture
“At this point, we’re able to rule out a fracture,” Macdonald told reporters postgame. “There are more tests to be done. That’s why I’m saying that it’s positive [news]. We’re still working on that but right now, I think fracture is out, which is great news.”
Avoiding a fracture isn’t all the Seahawks should be worried about, but it’s major. Particularly if we’re talking about a hip injury here.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the quarterback underwent a CT scan but will wait for an MRI until Thursday. Despite the initial good news, it’s way too early to set a timetable on Darnold, who was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the injury.
“I really don’t know what the extent is,” Macdonald said when asked about Darnold potentially returning next week. “I’m just going by what they tell me.”
Lock gets praise from Seahawks coach
There’s no question the Seahawks defense stole the show on Wednesday night by holding the Patriots to 4.1 yards per play and 10 points. But backup quarterback Drew Lock did a heck of a job stepping up.
Lock completed 16-of-22 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown.
“He’ll get [a game ball] tomorrow,” said Macdonald. “He’ll get something of my own, maybe a belt. We love him, we love Drew. Guys love him, he’s just a Seahawk through and through.
“Your heart goes out to Sam, we’re praying that it’s minor, obviously,” Macdonald added. “He’s had such a great offseason. But Drew has too, you know? Drew has played really well. Anytime somebody is getting an opportunity it’s because someone wasn’t able to go, but you also want to show excitement for that player.”
While they wait for news on the Sam Darnold front, the Seahawks may find some solace in the fact that they don’t play again until Sept. 20. The long week is a result of both playing in the NFL Kickoff but also of it taking place on Wednesay instead of the usual Thursday window.
