The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ nightmare start is quickly becoming something much bigger than an 0-3 record
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ turnover woes and injuries headline a worst case scenario for the Bucs that has analysts worried.
You couldn’t draw up a worse start to the 2026 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team now sits at 0-3 without their starting quarterback. And head coach Todd Bowles already entered this season on the hot seat. Bowles pointed out this week the team is still just a game out of first place in the NFC South. And while he’s right, it’s not the kind of reassurance you’re looking for as Tampa Bay attempts to find a breakthrough in life after (Tom) Brady.
This season is flirting with disaster for the Bucs. And it’s a great embodiment of just how fast things can turn in the NFL. Is this just a rut? Or the signs of something bigger? On a new episode of the ‘4th & Football podcast’ hosts Kyle Crabbs & Garret Greenlee expressed their concerns of Tampa Bay’s disaster start…and what it means for their future.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shaky start makes it hard to find a happy ending
The Baker Mayfield injury is the proverbial icing on the cake for a disaster start to this season. But even if Baker were healthy, nothing about the Buccaneers’ trajectory inspires confidence.
Tampa Bay has seven turnovers in three games. A Week 1 loss in Cincinnati was an abomination of ball security. But it happens. Then the Bucs came home and lost to the Browns in Week 2. That game gaveTampa Bay extended prep for a game-winning drive opportunity. It slipped away. Then came a 23-16 loss to the Vikings in Week 3, a game where Minnesota managed just nine first downs on offense. Tampa allowed a special teams touchdown and could not generate anything offensively.
Zac Robinson’s play-calling has fallen into the trap of being predictable, too. The worst case scenario concerns for Robinson’s hire have manifested early on.
Less than 365 days ago, the Buccaneers beat the Seahawks on the road in Seattle and beat the 49ers by double digits at home. Baker was in the MVP conversation after a 5-1 start that included dramatic, clutch performances to secure several of those early-season wins.
Now? Mayfield has a dislocated thumb from the end of the Vikings game and is expected to miss a couple of weeks. He leads the league in sacks taken, getting sacked on 12% of his drop backs. Every offensive lineman was credited with three or more pressures against Minnesota, where he was sacked six times. Life comes at you fast…this is entering Murphy’s Law territory.
Murphy’s Law
– NOUN
Definition: an observation; anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
Undrafted rookie QB Jalon Daniels now steps in as the starter as the Bucs try to steady the ship. They’d better get it under control in a hurry — or else this story will not have a happy ending for the Bucs.
